Functions & Objectives:

The major objective for creation of the Sports & Youth Welfare Directorate was to vigorously pursue and implement the scheme of physical education training which was introduced earlier in some of the Schools of the State. For this purpose the activities of the physical instructors who were posted in a number of High Schools all over the State were frequently monitored.

The Directorate also gave emphasis on scouting of talents and imparting coaching programmes for the budding sportsmen in different sports disciplines for improvement of their skills. For this purpose a total number of 21 coaches were appointed in different sports disciplines.

The Directorate has been whole heartedly encouraging the NCC activities in the State. There are 5 NCC Group Headquarters and 27 NCC Units under the Group Headquarters. The Civilian Staff of the NCC Group Headquarters and Units are manned by Grade – III & Grade – IV personnel provided by the Directorate of Sport & Youth Welfare, Assam. Their salaries are also borne by the State Government.

The Directorate has been extending financial assistance annually to the NCC Authorities for conducting various programmes for NCC cadets of the State such as holding of Republic Day Camp, Thal Sena Camp, Vayu Sena Camp, Nau Sena Camp, C.M's Rally, National Integration Camp and Annual Training Camps. The NCC cadets on completion of their training are conferred "B" & "C" Certificates. The present enrolled strength of NCC Cadets in the State is 33000. The State Government desires to raise the strength of NCC Cadets to 50000.
